England vs Australia 1st Test Match Preview Ashes 2019

England has chosen a 14 man squad for the first test against Australia. That is not something we expect from England during a home test but it once again shows the uncertainty in the camp. James Anderson is recovering from an injury and we don’t think England is going to risk him in the first match of Ashes 2019.
England vs Australia 1st Test Match Preview Ashes 2019

Australia hold the Ashes, having handed England a 4-0 drubbing at home in early 2018. But they have not won the series in England since 2001, when Steve Waugh’s side razed all in their path. In 2015, they lost the series 3-2, with Stuart Broad setting up an unassailable lead in the fourth Test by bowling out Australia for 60 in the first innings at Trent Bridge. The last meeting between the sides was in the World Cup semi-final, when England bowled Australia out for 223 and eased to an emphatic eight-wicket win.

Team News

England

  • Jofra Archer in their 14-man squad to take on Australia in the first Ashes test. However, he might not be unleashed straight away and would have to wait a little longer for his test debut.
  • Chris Woakes is more likely to be given the nod for the role of third seamer with Stuart Broad and James Anderson confirmed to lead England’s bowling attack.
  • Joe Denly will bat at 4. He is a consistent performer in domestic circuit and has scored 11000+ runs in 1st class cricket.
  • Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes will handle the Middle order. Both are most reliable batsman of the team. Stokes will handle the All-Round section.
  • Jonny Bairstow will bat at 7. Very attacking batsman and was in prime form this WC. He got out on duck in both innings against Ireland.
  •  Moeen Ali is the lone spinner and  will lead the spin attack while Joe Denly will assist them. Moeen Ali’s role will be more important as the innings progresses.

Australia

  • David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will open the innings. Last time they both played together was in SA 2017 where the ball tampering incident took place.
  • Usman Khawaja will bat at 3. He has some injury concerns but is declared fit to play. He is a solid defensive batsman.
  • S Smith will bat at 4. He will be the backbone of this batting unit and has heaps of experience with him. He averages above 60 in test cricket.
  • Nathan Lyon is the lone specialist spinner in the side and a confirmed starter for this opening game along with James Pattinson.
  • Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle are fighting for the third seamer spot and it is Starc who will likely be the selectors’ preference.

Pitch Report: Edgbaston Cricket Ground, England
The pitch at Edgbaston is sporting a brown tinge, something that both teams may not have expected. Expect plenty of help for the bowling side under overcast conditions and the Duke ball in hand. We think the test match is going to move fast and the bowlers will hold an upper hand throughout the proceedings.
